STUDENT BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES:

Rules & Standards:
The school has rules for both classroom and playground.
At the commencement of the school year, teachers will establish a set of classroom rules for their own classes that are consistent with the whole school rules.
All rules are to be displayed in classrooms and in prominent locations around the school and communicated to the school community on enrolment, at the start of each school year and via the school newsletter.

There are five basic rules, which are: -
  1. We all have the right to feel happy and safe.
  2. We play safely in the correct areas at the right time.
  3. We put our rubbish in the bins.
  4. We take care of our environment.
  5. We will not tease, swear or hurt other people’s feelings.

OUR APPROACH TO BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT:

At Millwarra Primary, we have adopted a whole school approach, which is consistent and positive and will foster a climate where personal responsibility and self-discipline are developed.
The approach used will be a balance of prevention, early intervention and postvention.

We are committed to the following strategies: -

1)    Promoting a sense of belonging at school.
We will provide: -
  • Whole school approaches to developing policies, structures, curriculum programs and other activities to build a positive and supportive school environment.
  • Increase the sense of belonging and security by having policies and strategies concerning bullying and harassment and harm minimisation drug education programs.
  • Monitoring closely school attendance.
  • Providing flexible, relevant, inclusive and appropriate curriculum.
  • Placing a high priority on transition programs to establish a welcoming and socially supportive school community, especially for Prep entry students.
  • Developing activities and programs to build positive relationships and improve communication between teachers and students.
  • Encouraging parent participation in school programs and activities.
  • Monitoring and enhancing teaching style.
  • Ensuring that opportunities are provided for children to contribute and teaching them the necessary skills to take advantage of these opportunities with recognition and acknowledgement of their efforts being made eg. values program, student of the month, sporting and class awards.

2)    Contributing to positive social behaviours and problem solving skills.
The school will develop, implement, monitor and evaluate programs and activities related to this strategy, utilising the delivery of coordinated and comprehensive services of student support personnel.

This will include: -
  • Programs and activities to enhance resilience.
  • Peer support programs
  • Policies of Health Promoting Schools.
  • Skill development programs in problem solving, conflict resolution, cooperative learning and behaviour.

3)    Ensuring that students develop positive relationships with teachers and other caring adults.
The school will promote these benefits by pastoral care structure, mentor and other programs offering one to one mentoring and assistance and enrichment activities.

4)    Involving and strengthening partnerships with parents and families:
The school will involve parents and families by-
  • Participation and involvement in school activities and in programs such as Classroom Helpers, Bridges, Developing Literacy Partnerships, Family Maths etc.
  • Communicating regularly regarding positives.
  • Providing access to support agencies.
  • Encouraging parents positions of responsibility and include welcoming strategies to optimise their participation.

5)    Fostering values and beliefs:
Strategies to encourage and provide reference points for students will include: -
  • Providing involvement in caring for the environment.
  • Providing relative literature, music and arts and values program in the school curriculum.

At Millwarra Primary we are committed to dealing with behaviour management issues with a minimum of formality and a maximum of cooperation and consultation between relevant students, parents and teachers.
Breaches and infringement of rules and standards set by this code will result in some consequences or action: -

SANCTIONS:
Penalties or actions will be a logical consequence of this misbehaviour and include - verbal warning, deprivation of privileges, inside supervision, written or verbal apology, playground duty, referral to Principal or nominee, notification and contact with parent and interview with parents and Principal.
Serious and continued breaches of school rules may lead to suspension and/or expulsion procedures in line with DE&T guidelines.

In monitoring and evaluating this code of conduct, the school will review related policies and guidelines and report on the Code’s effectiveness to the community and Department of Education and Training.
